Team USA’s Group Stage schedule for Women’s World Cup

Here’s a look at Team USA’s schedule of matches for the Group Stage of the Women’s World Cup.

The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) has been put into Group D for the 2015 Women’s World Cup. And while the tournament officially kicks off on Saturday, June 6 with a match between host Canada and tournament dark horse China, the USWNT and rest of it’s group won’t take the pitch until Monday, June 8.

Much like the USMNT in last year’s Men’s World Cup, the USA faces the Group of Death. Alongside the No. 2-ranked Yanks are the world’s No. 5 team Sweden, No. 10 Australia and No. 33 Nigeria. Only one other group has more than one team ranked in the top 10 (Group F with No. 3 France and No. 6 England), but no group has three teams of such ranking (let alone two top-5 teams!).

The USWNT will open up play against Australia in Winnipeg Stadium. Following that match, it will be the powerhouse battle between the Sweden and the USA. Finally, the Yanks will take on Nigeria to close out the round. If there’s any positive in the seeding/scheduling, it’s that should Team USA need an outright victory (and/or goal differential) they’ll be playing the group’s lowest-seeded team in the final match.

Whereas in the men’s tournament only the top two teams from each group advanced, there is a possibility for select third-place finishers to make it through to knockout rounds. The four third-place teams with the highest point totals will move on.

While the Knockout Stage can be murky, due to its dependence on seedings the Group Stage schedule is cut and dry. Below is a look at who, when and where the USWNT will play during the first round, as well as what television stations you can catch them on.
