China and the United States women’s national team squared off in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Women’s World Cup.

The United States women’s national team has been less than impressive throughout the 2015 Women’s World Cup, despite making it to the quarterfinals. They’ve gotten through on talent alone and looked vulnerable at points.

That wasn’t the case during the first half of their quarterfinal match up against China. The offense was pressing early and had more than their fair share of chances, including an absurd miss in the first minute of the game.

The United States continued to attack down the wings and cross the ball into the box, and with a lot of created chances as well, some just narrowly missing.

Perhaps their best opportunity came when China’s goalkeeper Wang Fei came out to make a play and missed. Julie Johnston got a shot on goal but a Chinese defender on the back line was able to make a save and preserve the scoreless draw.

Carli Lloyd also threatened from distance with an impressive free kick.

The USWNT took advantage of their relentless aerial attack early in the second half. A long lob into the box found Lloyd who was able to head it into the bottom right corner of the goal and give teh Americans a 1-0 lead.

The Untied States nearly found a second goal off a screamer from Ali Krieger that found the cross bar.

The United States will face the best team in the world, Germany, in the semifinals. The top-ranked team in FIFA’s Women’s Rankings was dominant in the group stage, winning one game by a margin of 10-0. They were nearly upset by France in the quarterfinals when they found themselves down late in the game 1-0. A handball in the box by France gave Germany a penalty and the game-tying goal.

The game eventually went to penalty kicks with Germany getting the win when their goal keeper, Nadine Angerer, blocking the shot of Claire Lavogez.

Germany and the USWNT will play on Tuesday, June 30th in the semifinals.
