Why Pokemon GO will be good for Pokemon Sun and Moon
Will Pokemon GO hurt sales of the upcoming Pokemon Sun and Moon?
Pokemon GO is wildly popular for an app that’s less than a week old. It’s reportedly outstripped Tinder and Twitter in daily usage, it’s been played by professional sports players, and a significant portion of the parents in America have had to learn once again that “Pokemons” and/or “Pokemans” are not acceptable plural forms. For what it’s worth, the plural of Pokemon is Pokemon.
But, and this is a big “but,” will Pokemon GO negatively affect Pokemon Sun and Moon, the pair of titles set to be released for the Nintendo 3DS in November?
Well, no. In fact, Pokemon GO being so popular will probably help Sun and Moon. Here are three reasons why.
First, for now, this app is a fad. A massive one, but a fad nevertheless. Sun and Moon are coming out in November. That’s four months for people to get bored with GO and want to go back to a more standard Pokemon model. Four months might not seem like a long time, and this isn’t to say that many people won’t still be playing GO in November. Far from it. But people hooked on Pokemon and bored of the app will soon have a newer thing to play with: Sun and Moon.
Secondly, problems with Pokemon GO have already surfaced and may lure players back into the traditional mold. Users have already expressed displeasure with missing parts of the traditional Pokemon model in the app. For example, Pokemon GO doesn’t allow you to trade Pokemon with other players as of yet, while the handheld games do. Moreover, rare Pokemon aren’t as much of a pain to find in the handheld games as they are in GO. (Seriously, how many Rattata have you caught? Think about it.)

Third, we come to the parent issue. For now, it seems pretty accurate to say that parents are generally okay with handing their phones over to their kids and letting the tykes get their first taste of that sweet, sweet Pokemon-catching action. But four months for now, after several more billing cycles and drained batteries, it might be easier to invest in a 3DS and a big Pokemon game than to once again give the munchkin the phone.
Also, then the parents can finally start their own Pokemon GO account, which may or may not be important to them.
Pokemon Sun and Moon will be released on November 18, while Pokemon GO is currently available in certain countries like the U.S.
