DraftKings Afternoon MLB Picks For August 28

There are just two games this afternoon, and only one pitcher worthy of being a staff anchor. Should we use him with everyone else, or is there a suitable fade option? Let’s check the past stats to help build our DraftKings lineup out of this shallow player pool.

More from DFS

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players. Check out this post from Matt McGarvey for great tips about whether to use a hot player in DFS or not.

Brock Stewart has given up 15 runs in his first 12 major league innings over three starts. DO NOT, under any circumstances, use him against the Cubs.

Best Bet:

Madison Bumgarner ($12,800):Ā The Braves offense has enjoyed an awakening lately, but Bumgarner has pitched very well against them in his career. The current Braves are hitting only .209 in 153 at bats with just nine runs to go with 31 strikeouts. Those aren’t as good as the numbers he has against some teams, but on a smaller slate, those are elite numbers.

Jon Lester ($11,500):Ā If you only choose to use one ace this afternoon, you could make a strong case for it being Lester. The Dodgers are hitting only .196 against Lester in 112 at bats with ten runs and 28 strikeouts. You could also argue that that the Dodgers’ offense is struggling worse than the Braves’ right now. I would imagine ownership of these two will be very similar.

Honorable Mention:

Eduardo Rodriguez ($6,400):Ā The Royals are only hitting .242 against Rodriguez with four RBI and four strikeouts in 33 at bats. There is a big step down in this slight slate, but if you want to afford some big bats, it may be necessary. On the bright side, the homer and half of the RBI came off the bat of Mike Moustakas, who is on the DL.

Homer Bailey has been knocked around this year so far. The Diamondbacks have done it to him throughout his career. Michael Bourn ($3,900) is only 3-15, but he has two walks, a double, a triple, a homer, and four RBI against Homer. Welington Castillo ($3,800) has two doubles and two RBI in ten at bats. Rickie Weeks ($3,900) has punished Homer Bailey. Weeks is 14-28 with five walks, two doubles, two homers, and eight RBI against him.

Matt Kemp ($3,700) is only 11-57(.193) against Madison Bumgarner, but he has three walks, three doubles, two homers, and five RBI. Freddie Freemanā€˜s ($4,000) average also leaves something to be desired (.231 in 26 at bats), but he has a walk, two doubles, a homer, and three RBI against MadBum.

Yordano Ventura has had a brilliant August, but the Red Sox have hit him well. Mookie Betts ($5,300) is 3-9 with a double and a RBI. Jackie Bradley, Jr. ($4,200) has done the same, except he has also drawn a walk. Travis Shaw ($3,200) is the guy that has really hurt Ventura though. Shaw is 3-6 with a homer and four RBI against him.

Joey Votto ($5,000) hit a three run homer against Archie Bradley back on July 22nd. It was enough to hand him the loss.

Joe Panik ($4,700) and Buster Posey ($4,100) both hit two run homers against Aaron Blair earlier this year. Can they do it again?

Enrique Hernandez ($3,200) is 3-10 with a triple, a homer, and three RBI against Jon Lester. Howie Kendrick ($) has five RBI against Lester on four doubles and three singles in 29 at bats.
