Fantasy Baseball 2017: 3 Starting Pitchers to add for Week 3
By Bill Pivetz
There are a few starting pitchers with good fantasy baseball matchups in Week 3. These pitchers are widely available and should be added.
If you are struggling out of the gate with your pitchers, you are looking for any solution possible to improve your fantasy baseball stats before it’s too late.
The easiest way would be to add a bunch of relief pitchers to help with your ratio stats. The downside is that even just one earned run gives that pitcher a 9.00 ERA. And with how inconsistent relief pitchers have been so far, that’s a big risk.
I think your best bet would be to add a starting pitcher that is off to a hot start in the short fantasy baseball season. The three pitchers I list here have made two or three good starts and can continue that success in Week 3.

Jason Vargas (KC) – Vargas has two quality starts to start the season. He allowed one run on six hits and a walk while striking out six against the Houston Astros on the road.Vargas’ next start was at home against the Oakland A’s. He went 7.2 with four hits, one walk and eight strikeouts.
Vargas’ next start was at home against the Oakland A’s. He went 7.2 with four hits, one walk and eight strikeouts.
His next start will be April 19 at home against the San Francisco Giants. In 13 games, the Giants are hitting .237/.306/.384 with 56 runs scored (4.3 runs per game). The offense also has 95 strikeouts and 44 walks. The team seems to lack some power. The fact that this start is at home helps Vargas as Kauffman Stadium is not the most hitter-friendly field.
CC Sabathia (NYY) – Sabathia won’t make his Week 3 start until Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates on the road. If you can wait until then for pitching help, then Sabathia is someone you should add now. He’s improved greatly from start to start.
Sabathia improved his innings from five to six to 7.1 in his most recent outing. He has a 1.47 ERA, 1.04 WHIP with 11 strikeouts and seven walks for the season. The Pirates are also struggling at the plate. They are hitting .237/.308/.354 with nine homers and 40 runs scored in 11 games. PNC Park is a middle-of-the-road park for both pitchers and hitters. I think Sabathia is a good pickup for the end of the week.
Chase Anderson (MIL) – Anderson is the only two-start pitcher on this list. He has two tough matchups coming up, on the road against the Chicago Cubs on April 17 and home against the St. Louis Cardinals on April 22.
Anderson has a 0.69 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 1-0 record. While none of those numbers are expected to stay that low, it’s nice to see him start off well, unlike a teammate of his. Anderson stifled two good offenses in Colorado and Toronto. The Cubs and Cardinals are also good offenses but haven’t shown it yet. Chicago is hitting .242 while St. Louis is hitting .210.
Next: Stop dropping these five players
All of these pitchers come with a bit of risk. Granted, winning your fantasy baseball league takes some risk. Their respective offenses may not support them to get a win (use quality starts) but they should pitch well enough to improve the rest of your pitching stats. These three are widely available and should help you in Week 3.
