Can We Afford To Go Cheap On Pitching On DraftKings July 22nd?
By Mike Marteny
DraftKings Main MLB Picks For July 22
13 of the 15 games are in the main DraftKings tournament tonight. There isn’t a lot of high end pitching to go around, so let’s find some great middle tier options and stack Coors Field or the Dodgers!

The money line yesterday was down to 121.45. both of my lineups finished in triple digits. One missed the cut by 0.2 points. Using Alex Wood ensured that I couldn’t get in. The other lineup suffered through a failed Rockies stack.
The winning lineup was down a bit to 221.95. He used Yu Darvish and Aaron Nola, so his lineup was head and shoulders above most right there. He used his Pirates/A’s stack to take it home, even though the A’s scored just five runs.
These picks are based mostly on statistical analysis . If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players. Check out this post from Matt McGarvey for great tips about whether to use a hot player in DFS or not.

Next: DraftKings Main Lineup
P: David Price ($12,300): After some issues early on, Price has returned to form in July. He has only allowed two runs in three starts this month with 22 strikeouts in 20 innings. The Angels don’t strike out a whole lot, and they are better with Mike Trout in the lineup, but this lineup only really took off with Cameron Maybin in the leadoff spot. A regression could be coming with Maybin out, and it likely starts here. Price has a 2.92 ERA in his last five starts against the Angels.
P: Rich Hill ($11,700): Hill has recorded at least nine strikeouts in each of his last three starts. The blister issues seem to be gone for the moment, but he still wont go deep into games. That said, the Braves don’t scare me. They are hitting only .240 against Hill in 25 at bats with one run and seven strikeouts. Hill and Archer are pretty much interchangeable tonight, but the Rangers worry me a little more than the Braves do.
C: Tony Wolters ($2,800): Wolters has struggled at times this year, but he is still career .307 hitter at Coors Field. Left handers hit Chad Kuhl pretty well, and I want cheap exposure to this game. Kuhl has pitched well lately, but this is Coors Field, where even great pitchers look mortal. The Rockies are going to score some runs.
1B: Mitch Moreland ($3,400): Moreland is 2-6 with a solo homer against JC Ramirez in his career. There are better options at first base, and Angels Stadium isn’t really a hitters park, but Moreland is way too cheap against an average pitcher. I’ll take my chances.
2B: Yoan Moncada ($3,500): Kaufmann Stadium isn’t a great park for home runs, nor is Jason Vargas a good pitcher to hit homers off of. He has only allowed six in 61.1 home innings this year. Instead I will elect to go with some Sox that hit the ball to the gaps and have good speed. Moncada drove in four runs last night for the Sox at a bargain price. I’m going to see if he can do it again, though I bet his ownership is a lot higher than last night’s 2.8% clip.
3B: Mike Moustakas ($3,700): How is Moose this cheap? He is 7-17(.412) with four walks, a double, two homers, five runs scored, and six RBI in his career against Mike Pelfrey. Only nine of his 25 homers have come at the K this year, but whatever power his home park helps temper, Pelfrey should give back.
SS: Tim Anderson ($2,900): Anderson is 4-8 with a steal and three runs scored in his career against Jason Vargas. I wish he was still batting leadoff, and current leadoff hitter Melky Cabrera is a good play as well, but even Anderson in the lower third of the order could provide nice value for his price.
OF: Lorenzo Cain ($3,700): All three Royals outfielders are too cheap against Mike Pelfrey. Pelfrey has had some success this year, but not so much lately. He has a 5.30 road ERA, and the Royals are hitting .356 in 146 at bats against Pelfrey. Stack Royals tonight! Even if they are slumping, this is their best chance to pull out of it. Cain is 10-19(.526) with a walk, two doubles, a triple, two runs scored, and six RBI against Pelfrey. He is way too cheap!
OF: Brandon Moss ($3,200): Moss is 5-16(.312) with two walks, a double, a run scored, and two RBI in his career against Pelfrey. Moss was 25% owned last night, and it very well could happen again, but he is too cheap to just ignore against Pelfrey.
OF: Alex Gordon ($2,800): Gordon has had a miserable year, but he has torched Pelfrey this season. Gordon is 7-20 with three walks, a triple, a homer, four runs scored, and three RBI against Pelfrey. If Gordon is ever going to get his bat going this year, this is his chance. Pelfrey will likely be gone the next time these two teams meet.
Next: DraftKings Main Lineup 2
P: Brent Suter ($6,800): Suter has never faced the Phillies, but this is the Phillies. Sure, it’s a hitters park, but again…….the Phillies. The Phils are in the bottom five against left handed pitching this year, and right handed masher Tommy Joseph is mired in an awful slump right now. Meanwhile, Suter has a 1.80 ERA in his last 20 innings, and has not allowed a home run since June 13th. He once again finds himself in a favorable spot at a great price.

P: Ariel Miranda ($5,500): Many of you, especially Yankee fans, are going to scoff at this. And I will admit that this carries a healthy amount of risk with it, but Miranda has posted a 3.23 ERA at Safeco Field this year, and the Yankees have quietly slipped into the bottom third of the league against left handed pitching. Add that to the fact that Aaron Judge is mired in his first real slump, and this looks like a great return on Miranda’s salary tonight. I’m not saying that Miranda is going to win, but a quality start is entirely possible.
C: Yasmani Grandal ($3,600): Grandal is largely forgotten in this lineup nowadays, but he still has some pop in his bat. He is 4-10 with two walks, three doubles, a run scored, and two RBI in his career against Julio Teheran. He deserves to be in this Dodgers stack.
1B: Paul Goldschmidt ($5,500): Much like Rick Porcello, Tanner Roark isn’t returning to his 2016 form anytime soon. He has allowed three runs or more in every game since June 4th. In a couple of those the problems were exacerbated by errors, but poor pitching is still involved in the equation. Goldschmidt is the biggest threat in the Arizona lineup, and the only most likely to make Roark’s night more difficult.
2B: Brandon Drury ($3,100): Drury has a nice little reverse platoon split going on this year. He is hitting .295 against righties and .326 at Chase Field with six of his eight homers there. Drury could be a nice way to save some money against an average righty in Roark.
3B: Jake Lamb ($5,300): Roark has been creamed by left handed bats this year. Lefties are hitting .303 with ten homers in 211 at bats. Both of Lamb’s hits off of Tanner Roark are home runs. He is one of the best bets to go deep tonight.
SS: Corey Seager ($4,800): Seager is 2-6 in his career against Julio Teheran. Both of the hits are home runs, which should come as no surprise considering Teheran’s issues with left handed batters. Load up on Dodger lefties tonight!
OF: Charlie Blackmon ($5,700): Lefties are hitting .291 against Chad Kuhl this season, and Blackmon is likely the best lefty on this team. Gerardo Parra is a nice target too as he has been on a tear in the second half. I am not stacking Rockies due to Kuhl pitching well and the likelihood of massive ownership once again. I elected to go with Dodgers/Diamondbacks instead.
OF: Cody Bellinger ($4,900): I went cheap on pitching so I could stack Diamondbacks and Dodgers. Bellinger seems to have slowed down, but a closer look reveals that that is anything but the case. He is hitting .367 with two homers and seven RBI over the last ten games. He needs to be in there against Teheran tonight.
OF: Adam Duvall ($4,700): I have no fancy stats to flash here. Just the fact that Duvall has clubbed seven homers in just 85 at bats against left handed pitchers this season. Rookie lefty Chris O’Grady takes the hill at Great American Ballpark tonight. O’Grady has only allowed one homer in two starts this year, but he faced the Giants, who lack power, and the Dodgers in Dodger Stadium. This is his first crack at a good lineup in a hitter’s park.
