Next: DraftKings Pitcher Plays
Top Tier:
Luis Castillo is making what will likely be his last start of the 2017 season. On top of that, the team may elect to pull him at or before five innings depending on the pitch count. The chances of Castillo going deep into the game are practically zero, and he is still priced this high? No thanks. The Brewers only picked up two runs off of him in 5.2 innings earlier this year, but he did pick up nine strikeouts. There is a good chance that Castillo goes five, gives up a couple of runs, and strikes out a half dozen. Is that worth $11,000? You have to decide for yourself.
Blake Snell has a 1.91 ERA in five starts since returning from his exile to Durham. The Twins are hitting very well lately, but this is in the Trop, a pitcher’s park, and the Twins don’t hit lefties as well as they used to. Snell should put together about the same start as Castillo, except he will most certainly go a little deeper into the game. That makes him by top pick for today.
Middle Tier:
There is a steep drop off after the top two today. Skaggs is easily the best bet if you want to go cheap due to his 3.82 road ERA (compared to 6.15 at home) and the opponent. The A’s have struggled against lefties this year, but they did rough up Skaggs earlier this year. Like I said, pickings are slim. If you are going cheap with at least one pitcher, you have to be willing to accept some risk.
Bargain Pitchers:
Sean Manaea has struggled lately, and the Angels lineup got a whole lot better last week. There is also no way I am touching Matt Garza at Great American. That leaves Twins rookie Aaron Slegers, who was very good in his first start last month, allowing two runs in 6.1 innings. The good news ends there though as he only struck out three. That said, He gets a park boost heading to Tampa, and a lineup that strikes out quite a bit. Just the fact that he held his own against Cleveland is enough to give him a shot here. Just be aware that he can’t bail out a bad performance with strikeouts.
Top Tier:
If you are spending money here, it has to go on Joey Votto. Votto is 12-35(.343) with eight walks, two homers, ten runs scored, and seven RBI in his career against Matt Garza. Eugenio Suarez is also a solid pick since he is 4-13 with a double, a walk, three runs scored, and two RBI against Garza. And of course, whoever starts at catcher is worth a look.
Middle Tier:
All Rays left handers could be worth a look against Aaron Slegers. Lucas Duda has slowed down lately, but despite the horrid average, he still has four homers in the last ten games.
Bargain Shoppers:
A cheap stack will be the A’s today if you believe that they can hit Tyler Skaggs hard again. They are so cheap that they would enable you to use both higher priced pitchers. Both Ryon Healy and Matt Chapman are $3,000 or under, and both have hit lefties pretty well. Healy is the only current A that has homered off of Skaggs so far.
Martin Maldonado is perfect in his career against Sean Manaea. He has a single and a double and three RBI in his two at bats. Both Pujols and Cron have struggled against Manaea (1-17 combined), so it may be in your best interest to avoid them.
Top Tier:
Brian Dozier has a triple and a RBI in three at bats against Ian Snell. The Twins don’t have a ton of righty power, but Dozier and the red-hot Jorge Polanco both bat from that side.
Middle Tier:
Scooter Gennett and Zack Cozart are a combined 7-25 with three walks, two double, a triple, three runs scored, and two RBI against Garza. They would fit nicely if you are stacking Reds since they come at a reasonable price.
Andrelton Simmons and Brandon Phillips are both reasonable priced, and have ample power against a pitcher that has been rocked by righties. 15 of his 17 homers allowed have come against right handers. Strangely enough, he has allowed 12 of those 17 homers at home, a noted pitcher’s park.
Starting players just because the opposing team has a below average bullpen is usually a bad idea. Today may be the exception since we know that Castillo wont go deep into the game. Neil Walker and Jonathan Villar are both priced pretty well considering they should have at least two at bats against the Reds bullpen.
Bargain Shoppers:
Marcus Semien and Chad Pinder have both hit lefties well so far this year. Pinder in particular has shown some pretty good pop against lefties.

Top Tier:
Mike Trout is really expensive, but he is likely worth it. Trout is 5-10 with two walks, a triple, two homers, three runs scored, and three RBI in his career against Sean Manaea. Justin Upton looks like a very strong play as well.
Kevin Kiermaier and Corey Dickerson will both hold the platoon advantage over a rookie making his second career start. Sleger was solid in the first one, but that was over a month ago and the Rays can hit at home.
I don’t much care that Byron Buxton is 0-2 against Ian Snell so far. With what he has done in the last month, it may be worth seeing if he can keep it up if you have used your five Reds already.

Middle Tier:
It should come as no surprise that the entire Reds outfield is in play. The best bet may be the cheapest, Scott Schebler. Schebler is 2-5 with a three run homer against Garza. Adam Duvall is 3-11 with two doubles, a homer, and six RBI off of Garza already. Billy Hamilton is only 4-21(.190) against Garza so far, but he has swiped three bags.
Ryan Braun is kind of expensive, but he did hit a homer off of Luis Castillo earlier this year. Stephen Vogt is a solid catcher play today since the Reds will likely go to their bullpen early. For that same reason, Eric Thames may even be worth a shot since he feasts on Reds pitching.
Bargain Shoppers:
There isn’t much down here today except for the aforementioned Schebler. However, Chad Pinder is also eligible in the outfield if you want to sneak him in, and veteran Peter Bourjos could get a start with a righty on the hill.
