(14)Notre Dame vs. (17)LSU(-3.5) at Orlando, FL(1)

Notre Dame 9-3

Wins: vs. Temple(49-16), at Boston College(49-20), at Michigan State(38-18), vs. Miami(OH)(52-17), at North Carolina(33-10), vs. (11)USC(49-14), vs. (14)North Carolina State(35-14), vs. Wake Forest(48-37), vs. Navy(24-17)

Losses: vs. (15)Georgia(19-20), at (7)Miami(FL)(8-41), at (21)Stanford(20-38)

Record vs. bowl teams: 7-3

Notre Dame played a really tough schedule, and a win over Stanford would have put them in a New Year’s Six Bowl. Oh well, they still get to play on New Year’s Day!

The key to this team is RB Josh Adams. The junior had two solid years before this year, but really broke out this season, averaging 7.3 yards per carry for a total of 1,386 yards. When you stop Adams, you stop the Irish. He was only under 100 yards in five games this year. Georgia(53), Michigan State(56), Wake Forest(22), Miami(FL)(40), and Stanford(49). LSU is 24th in the nation against the run.

LSU 9-3, 6-2 (4th SEC):

Wins: vs. BYU(27-0), vs. Chattanooga(45-10), vs. Syracuse(35-26), at (21)Florida(17-16), vs. (10)Auburn(27-23), at Mississippi(40-24), vs. Arkansas(33-10), at Tennessee(30-10), vs. Texas A&M(45-21)

Losses: at Mississippi State(7-37), vs. Troy(21-24), at (2)Alabama(10-24)

Record vs. bowl teams: 2-3

No matter what else happens, LSU will best be known for beating an Auburn team they had no business beating and for losing to Troy in Death Valley at night while getting shut out in the first half. Ed Orgeron was lucky he wasn’t shown the door after that one game!

Purdue transfer Danny Etling gave the Tigers more of a passing attack than they usually have, but he was still not very good in the grand scheme of things. Derrius Guice is an elite runner, but you wouldn’t know it with defenses keying on him all the time. Ultimately, LSU is a team that still struggled to find an identity, but that defense is good enough to bail them out of some tough spots.

Prediction:

I see this being more of a defense oriented game that most think. Both of these teams have elite running backs. Both have good defenses. They both have big wins. They both have bad losses. This really is a tough one to pick. I tend to think that the Irish have proven more, but that LSU defense scares me. There is a reason that I’m not putting much on this game.

Pick: Notre Dame
