Michigan(-7.5) vs. South Carolina at Tampa, FL(4):

Michigan 8-4, 5-4 (6th Big Ten(14):

Wins: vs. (17)Florida(33-17), vs. Cincinnati(36-14), vs. Air Force(29-13), at Purdue(28-10), at Indiana(27-20), vs. Rutgers(35-14), vs. Minnesota(33-10), at Maryland(35-10)

Losses: vs. Michigan State(10-14), at (2)Penn State(13-42), at (5)Wisconsin(10-24), vs. (9)Ohio State(20-31)

Record vs. bowl teams: 1-4

Three of their four losses were to top ten teams at the time. Something can be said for that. However, this offense was awful, and it had everything to do with the quarterbacks. Freshman Brandon Peters is the only one that could get this offense going even a little bit. Karan Higdon and Chris Evans lead a ground attack that is pretty impressive. The defense is also a pretty solid unit. However, if Michigan gets into a situation where they need to pass to keep up, they are in trouble.

South Carolina 8-4, 5-3 (5th SEC):

Wins: vs. North Carolina State(35-28), at Missouri(31-13), vs. Louisiana Tech(17-16), vs. Arkansas(48-22), at Tennessee(15-9), vs. Vanderbilt(34-27), vs. Florida(28-20), vs. Wofford(31-10)

Losses: vs. Kentucky(13-23), at Texas A&M(17-24), at (1)Georgia(10-24), vs. (3)Clemson(10-34)

Record vs. bowl teams: 4-4

This is a young team that was plagued by inconsistency this year. There was high hopes after the Gamecocks took down NC State, but the loss to Kentucky quickly quashed that. The main thing that South Carolina gained this year was experience. They lost two games that they could have won, and they already have a strong defense. Holding Georgia to 24 points in Athens is not easy to do.

Prediction:

This is going to be a defensive battle. South Carolina has the better offense, but is it enough better? The Michigan defense is even better than South Carolina’s, and they thrived on turnovers before Miami made it “cool.” The key will be for South Carolina to take care of the ball. I’m more comfortable betting the under (42.5) than the spread, but that isn’t why we’re here.

Pick: South Carolina
