AEW Fyter Fest preview: Jon Moxley vs. Joey Janela
By Paul Bradley
The expectations for this contest are through the roof as two hardcore icons of two different eras are set to clash at Fyter Fest on June 29.
It all started with a familiar face entering through the crowd at Double or Nothing in Las Vegas.
Jon Moxley, formerly known as Dean Ambrose, made his AEW debut in spectacular fashion when he attacked Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega after their hellacious main event. It was then revealed later on that after the match another chaotic character, Joey Janela, confronted Moxley backstage at the event.
And as soon fans saw Moxley pull the cigarette out of Janela’s mouth and blow smoke back in his face they knew they were in for something crazy.
Janela hasn’t made much of an impact in AEW yet but he has been positioned as a major player in the company moving forward, as is evident by him being chosen as Moxley’s debut opponent at Fyter Fest.
Many fans are looking past Janela towards Moxley’s next announced opponent, which will be Omega at All Out on August 31. But the worst thing you can do when facing off against Janela is not take him seriously. Janela has made a career out of defying expectations and surpassing his supposed limitations, so fans should not look at this match and expect a squash by the better-known veteran.
Something crazy is going to happen in this match. What that will be is still a mystery, but when you put two of the craziest minds in the business in the same ring together you can expect something wild will take shape. Moxley did say, in episode 1 of The Road to Fyter Fest, that the match will be “like Amazon Prime for head trauma,” whatever that may entail.
The question is how far will these men go? And will AEW be putting any limitations being on their hardcore styles right out of the gate?
AEW has shown so far that they are very open to different in-ring and performance styles and aren’t afraid to let talent be themselves. So maybe they will allow Moxley and Janela to go all-out in their match. And if you know these two, either man going all-out means anything is possible.
