Chelsea have been lining up a big bid for Kai Havertz for weeks. Unfortunately for the Blues, Real Madrid are ready to swoop in and steal him away.

Kai Havertz is quickly becoming one of the summer’s hottest transfer targets. Chelsea are keen to add him as part of their squad overhaul, but it seems they may have already lost the transfer battle to Real Madrid.

Reports from Germany claim the young German midfielder has already decided to cast his lot with Los Blancos. That would be news to Chelsea officials who have been negotiating with Bayer Leverkusen regarding his transfer fee for some time.

Havertz is interested in moving to Real Madrid, in part, because he wants to emulate the path Toni Kroos took to become a global superstar. Like Havertz, Kroos cut his teeth in the Bundesliga before making a big-money move to La Liga. It remains to be seen whether or not Havertz has the ability to make the transition so successfully.

The news that Havertz could be headed to Spain will be a bitter transfer pill to swallow for officials at Stamford Bridge. The Blues wanted to bring in Havertz to help combine with expected new boy Timo Werner this summer. Chelsea still have plenty of time to chase other midfield targets, but losing out on Havertz will force them to pursue lesser options.

Havertz would be expected to contend with Luka Modric and Kroos for playing time at Real Madrid. He may struggle to walk right into the club’s starting XI, but he should be able to steadily take playing time away from Modric over the next season or two. Havertz will need to exercise patience, but he has the skill required to flourish in Zinedine Zidane’s fluid system.

Moving for Havertz might also limit the other transactions Real Madrid can make this summer. The move will cost the Spanish giant well over £100 million. The club have significant financial resources at their disposal, but other players will need to be sold before additional reinforcements can be acquired.

Chelsea may yet make another move to steal Havertz back from Real Madrid, but it’s time for the Premier League club to start evaluating other options. The young midfielder seems to have his heart set on taking his talents to La Liga.
