Chelsea are reportedly set to add Timo Werner, but that doesn’t mean the Blues’ Bundesliga shopping is over, now turning their attention to Kai Havertz.

Quite a few Premier League clubs are planning to forego transfer spending this summer due to the global pandemic. Chelsea don’t seem to be impacted in the slightest. They’ve already reportedly stumped big money to pry Timo Werner away from RB Leipzig and their Bundesliga shopping spree isn’t quite done.

Instead, the Blues still are working hard to buy Kai Havertz. Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly £15 million apart in their valuations for the talented midfielder. That figure shouldn’t concern Chelsea fans who want to see the talented German added to their favorite club’s ranks next season. There’s still plenty of time for both sides to negotiate and get down to a figure they can accept.

If Chelsea push too hard, they could easily be forced to compete against Havertz next season. Both Liverpool and Manchester United are interested in adding him to their respective midfield ranks. If Havertz doesn’t get a move to England, he might end up with a Spanish power like Real Madrid or Barcelona instead. Leverkusen certainly don’t need to lower their asking price for Havertz anytime soon.

If the player does make the move to Stamford Bridge, he may be the attacking midfielder who really ties Frank Lampard’s attack together. The addition of Werner should give the Blues a much-needed boost of firepower up front (not to mention Chelsea’s earlier agreed-on move for Hakim Ziyech. Werner does rely on through balls to score a healthy portion of his goals. Havertz is the perfect midfielder to play those property weighted balls to set Werner through on goal.

The only concern about Havertz’s ability to adjust to life in England is his lack of physicality. The slight 21-year-old does a lot of things right for Leverkusen, but he’s not going to engage in many 50/50 challenges. In that way, his style of play might be slightly better suited for a league that doesn’t require the athleticism of the Premier League.

That doesn’t mean Chelsea shouldn’t break the bank for him this summer. They desperately need a young, attacking midfielder who can create chances for their talented finishers. £90 million is a fortune to spend during a global pandemic, but Havertz has the talent to make the move pay off for Chelsea.
