Chiefs lock up Andy Reid, Brett Veach through 2025 season
The Kansas City Chiefs kept their roster intact. Now, they’re making sure the brain trust is in place with Andy Reid and Brett Veach staying in town.
The Kansas City Chiefs are going to be a problem for a long, long time.
An offseason which included signing quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a 10-year extension, defensive tackle Chris Jones to a four-year deal and inking tight end Travis Kelce for another half-dozen years somehow got better on Monday afternoon.
In more great news for Chiefs Kingdom, owner Clark Hunt signed both head coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach to contract extensions running through 2025. The financial terms are undisclosed as they don’t pertain to the salary cap.
Reid, 62, is coming off the first Super Bowl win of his head-coaching career. In 21 years between Kansas City and the Philadelphia Eagles, he’s amassed 207 regular-season wins, sixth-most all time. With the Chiefs, Reid has a record of 77-35 (.688) and has only missed the playoffs once in seven campaigns.
With Reid signing on for the next six seasons, he’ll coach Mahomes through his 30th birthday. The duo is the best quarterback-coach tandem in football, and after winning their first ring together in February, it stands to reason more could be ahead.
Veach, 42, is one of the more highly-respected general managers in the league for his efforts to not only keep a championship team together this summer, but to help build it. The former University of Delaware running back become the Kansas City GM in 2017 following the firing of John Dorsey, and added key pieces to the roster.
Last offseason, Veach traded for defensive end Frank Clark and signed safety Tyrann Mathieu, rebuilding the defense in a matter of months.
On March 30, Kansas City had $177 in cap space. Since then, Veach has done the aforementioned deals with Kelce, Mahomes and Jones along with restructuring wide receiver Sammy Watkins’ pact and keeping receiver Demarcus Robinson, defensive tackle Mike Pennel and cornerback Bashaud Breeland on one-year deals. Kansas City also signed former All-Pro guard Kelechi Osemele, and now has $13.8 million in space.
For the Chiefs, the offseason was perfect. Now, onto their #RunItBack campaign.
