Dak Prescott will be up for another contract deal, but Kirk Cousins gave him advice of being in the same spot before.

By now the worst-kept secret in the NFL is out. The Dallas Cowboys want Dak Prescott back and will not go down without a fight to bring him back. The question is, what’s his value?

Prescott, who’s entering his sixth season in the league, recently played under the franchise tag in 2020. This was in large part of a “prove-it” deal with a new head coaching staff under Mike McCarthy. So far, he proved his worth by leading the NFL in passing yards (1,856) during the first four and a half weeks of the season.

An ankle injury in Week 5 against the New York Giants sidelined him for the remainder of the season.

Prescott could play under the franchise tag a second time. However, that’s not the plan anyone envisioned. Players want to be paid and a quarterback of his caliber is worthy of a consistent salary.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins once was in this situation. His advice to Prescott? Embrace the tag. It could help in the long run.

Prescott on the tag could lead to a bigger payday.

“So, he played on the franchise tag this past year. I think he’s in a great spot now,” Cousins said on the Pro FootballTalk PM show last week. “Everybody knows he can play, and he’s an elite quarterback. Really, the ball is more in the court of the Cowboys and what they want to do going forward. But I think it’s a no-brainer that Dak’s the real deal and is going to have a great career moving forward. He’s in a really good spot.”

The Washington Football Team never could come to terms with Cousins after two franchise deals. He became the most sought-after quarterback free agent, signing a three-year deal with the Vikings worth $84 million. That eventually helped him land a two-year extension entering the 2020 offseason.

The Cowboys continue to have optimism they will get a deal done. Prescott has no intention of leaving Dallas, stating he wants a deal for the long term. The fact remains that the sides have had almost two years to get an extension going, nor has either elected to meet in the middle.

In the end, Prescott could come out as a winner in this entire deal.
