Patrick Mahomes and several other players around the league shared thoughts and prayers in response to the shooting at the University of Virginia.
Three University of Virginia football players were killed in an on-campus shooting late on Sunday night.
Wide receiver Devin Chandler, wide receiver Lavel Davis Jr. and linebacker D’Sean Perry were killed and two others were shot on Sunday night. One of the victims is in good condition while the other is in critical condition, according to reports.
Christopher Darnell Jones, a former player for Virginia in 2018, has been confirmed as the shooter and is in custody, as was announced by UVA president Jim Ryan on Monday morning, who also confirmed the death of the three football players.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was one of the first to wish condolences and prayers for Virginia.

Other NFL players and UVA alums, such as Juan Thornhill and Kurt Benkert, also took to Twitter to share their grief over a tragedy that no one saw coming.

Former NFL defensive end Chris Long, who also played at UVA, expressed his shock and disbelief at the harrowing news.

This is beyond heartbreaking. These young men were living their dreams and very well could’ve ended up playing alongside Mahomes or their UVA peers in the NFL. Now tragedy has cut that dream short.
Families have lost brothers, sons, and nephews. And that’s something that will never be recovered.
Mahomes, James, Thornhill, Benkert, Long and countless others have joined in expressing heartfelt condolences and prayers to the university, the football team, and the city of Charlottesville. It is truly a sports world and a country that is united in supporting the orange and blue during this tragic time.
