Former Virginia football player killed three Cavaliers players in a tragic on-campus shooting.

Tragedy has struck Charlottesville, as three Virginia football players were shot and killed by a former Cavaliers football player in an on-campus parking deck over Sunday night.

University of Virginia president Jim Ryan confirmed former Cavaliers player Chris Jones was the shooter. The three young men who have died are Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry. Ryan would confirm that two other people were wounded in the shooting. One is in critical condition and the other is in good condition. What an absolutely heartbreaking day for Virginia.

"“This is a sad, tragic and shocking day for our community,” said Ryan."

3-7 Virginia has two games left this year: Home vs. Coastal Carolina and at arch rival Virginia Tech.

Jones was a former Cavaliers football player who was on the 2018 team but did not appear in any games. Davis was a junior wide receiver from Dorchester, South Carolina. Chandler was a junior wide receiver from Huntersville, North Carolina. Perry was a junior linebacker from Miami, Florida. Davis played the most of the three this year, but all three men definitely leave an indelible impact.

I don’t really know what to say here. This is beyond heartbreaking. These men lost their lives in unbelievably tragic fashion. Chandler, Davis and Perry were someone’s son, brother, nephew and friend. They were living out a dream playing college football for one of the finest universities in the United States. Now those dreams are tragically over and the UVA campus’ soul has been crushed.

There are so many things bigger than sports, and the lives of young men are certainly one of them. Virginia may have two more games left to play this season, but how do the players even carry on? They lost three brothers at the hands of one of their own. This is Tony Elliott’s first year on the job. While it has been a challenging year for him thus far, his toughest challenge lies ahead of him now.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire University of Virginia family after this tragic event.
