The Masters Par 3 contest is a phenomenal addition to Augusta National on the Wednesday before the tournament and here’s how to watch the 2023 contest.

No tradition embodies the joy of golf at Augusta National Golf Club every year quite like The Masters Par 3 contest. The Wednesday before the tournament, players are joined by family and friends — some of them even serving as their caddies in the traditional white jumpsuits — as they play a 9-hole course with holes ranging from 70-140 yards. It’s all about fun, enjoyment and capturing the spirit of a hallowed golf course and tournament.

The Masters Par 3 contest has had some truly unforgettable moments that are fostered by the unique atmosphere. As the players and their familial posses make their way around DeSoto Springs Pond and Ike’s Pond, there have been 102 holes-in-one over the years in the event, not including Jack Nicklaus’ grandson getting a proverbial celeb shot and sinking a hole-in-one in recent years.

Beyond that, though, it’s a great way for fans to get into the spirit of golf even more ahead of the start of The Masters. So if you’re ready to watch the Par 3 contest, here’s what you need to know.

What time is The Masters Par 3 contest 2023?

The competition on Wednesday will begin at Noon ET and last until roughly 5 p.m. ET. There will be coverage either streaming or on cable throughout the entire contest as all of the players make their way through the 9-hole course in addition to having some fun with family and friends, allowing them to hit shots and otherwise.

When did the Masters Par 3 contest start?

The first iteration of the Wednesday contest was introduced in 1960 and was won by the legendary Sam Snead, who won again over a decade later. It has been played every year since with the exception of 2020 and 2021 when it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Has a Par 3 contest winner ever won The Masters?

One of the most infamous parts — perhaps the only infamous part — of The Masters Par 3 contest is that no one who has ever won the Wednesday competition has gone on to win the tournament that week. With that said, there have been Masters champions who have won the contest, just not in the same year. Winners of both are Sam Snead, Art Wall Jr., Arnold Palmer, Gay Brewer, Tom Watson, Tommy Aaron, Ben Crenshaw, Raymond Floyd, Vijay Singh, Sandy Lyle, Mark O’Meara, and Mike Weir, who shared the win at the Par 3 contest with fellow Canadian Mackenzie Hughes in 2022.

Who is playing the 2023 Masters Par 3 contest?

There is not an official list of who is playing the contest in any given year. Any current player in the field for the tournament that week and noncompeting past champions are all eligible to play. Not everyone even has to fully compete and keep score but, rather, can just enjoy the event with friends and family on the beautiful little course.
