Corbin Carroll continues to impress in his rookie season and last night he hit his fifth home run to lift the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Washington Nationals 3-1. He made sure that Arizona didn’t spoil a strong start from Merrill Kelly and now the Snakes sit at 18-14, just a half game behind the Dodgers in the NL West. The Nats are 13-19 after the loss and last in the NL East.

Tonight we get a matchup of two left-handers on the mound. Mackenzie Gore who expected to do a lot of pitching in the NL West, for the Nats. Gore is the former Padres prospect that they received in the Juan Soto trade. He will be opposed by Tommy Henry who is making his third start of the season and 12th of his career.

Gore enters this start at 3-2 with a 3.77 ERA while Henry is 1-0 with a 6.52 ERA. The Diamondbacks are home favorites against Washington.

Nationals vs. Diamondbacks prediction and pick

Both the Nationals and Diamondbacks are both pretty average against left-handed pitchers in terms of OPS, 15th and 17th, so neither team will have a particular advantage with the bats against the two young lefties. However, Washington may have an edge on the mound with Gore.

Mackenzie Gore allowed four runs across four innings last time out, but that was his worst start of the year. He has a 3.84 FIP with his 3.77 ERA on the year, but on the road he’s even better with a 2.87 ERA and a .619 OPS allowed. He has reverse splits and dominates right-handed hitters only giving up a .523 OPS to them. That will go a long way to neutralizing most of the Diamondbacks order with Christian Walker, Ketel Marte and Loudes Gurriel Jr. all swinging it from the right side. Arizona will need a big game from Corbin Carroll in a left-on-left situation.

I think Gore has a strong outing, but I don’t trust Washington’s lineup much at all, so I’ll take the under with an elevated total of 9.5.
