Breaking down the US Open cut rules to see how many players will make the cut at Los Angeles Country Club and how the rules compare to other majors.

With the way the USGA often handles the US Open, just making the cut is one of the ultimate tests in golf. And with Los Angeles Country Club being a new venue with difficult conditions in itself, the expectation is that there could be carnage out in LA this week for the third major championship of the year.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen players like Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm and Matt Fitzpatrick win the US Open with modest scores of -6, which speaks to how high the cut line can be for this tournament. But what about the US Open cut rules? How many players will make the cut at LACC and what does history tell us about where the line will be?

Let’s take a look at all of that, starting with how many players make the cut at the US Open.

US Open cut rules: How many players make the cut at Los Angeles Country Club?

The US Open cut rules are that the Top 60 players and ties after the first two rounds will make it into the weekend to compete for victory. That’s a slightly smaller number than we see on regular PGA Tour events, which take on the Top 65 and ties into the final two rounds.

Meanwhile, the other major championships also differ from the US Open cut rules. The PGA Championship and The Open Championship both take the Top 70 players and ties from the first two rounds while The Masters, with by far the smallest field of the four majors, only takes the Top 50 and ties.

What was the US Open cut line in 2022, 2021 and 2020

One of the many things that the US Open is famous — or perhaps infamous — for is the USGA making lives miserable for the players throughout the week. Subsequently, it’s no surprise that we’ve seen the cut line get quite high, even in recent years.

In the 2022 tournament at The Country Club, the cut line was at +3 and 64 players were able to get in for the final two rounds of play. The previous year at Torrey Pines, it was even higher with the line at +4 to get into the weekend, which 71 players did. And in 2020 at the notoriously difficult Winged Foot, the cut line was a ridiculous +6 with 62 players getting to play the final two rounds.
