On Tuesday night the Oakland A’s and the Kansas City Royals gave us a game for the ages during the 2014 American League Wild Card play-in.

More from Kansas City Royals

The back-and-forth contest was filled with drama and eventually concluded in the bottom of the 12th inning thanks to a remarkable rally on behalf of the Royals. It was the first time in 29 years that the Royals could claim victory in a playoff game though one fan missed all of it because he fell asleep in his seat.

Just moments before Eric Hosmer hit a triple off the left field wall to save the Kansas City Royals’ season, the fan sitting right behind home plate could be seen counting sheep while every other fan sat on the edge of their seat.

Now I understand the man may have been tired as that game extended into the morning hours. Still, how do you fall asleep at that point of the game? More importantly, how did he stay asleep with the Kauffman Stadium crowd rocking all night long?

There’s no way he would have slept through the eruption after Hosmer’s triple bounced off the wall so his sleep was likely short lived, though I’m not sure I’d be able to face myself in the mirror the next morning if I had missed that kind of history for the Kansas City Royals.
