In terms of an on-field job in the NFL, there may not be a worse position outside of being a kicker/punter.

More from Cincinnati Bengals

You’re routinely put in pressure situations (especially a kicker) and expected to be accurate every time you grace the field. Such was the case for Cincinnati Bengals kicker Mike Nugent on Sunday afternoon when he had a chance to win the game in overtime as the clock was set to expire.

Nugent, a veteran kicker who has been with the Cincinnati Bengals for quite some time hooked his kick, resulting in the game ending with a tie score. Mike Nugent was obviously unhappy with himself after the game and while most Cincinnati Bengals players kept their mouths shut, Adam ‘Pac Man’ Jones couldn’t hold his tongue.

“We were in a perfect position to win the game, two seconds left on the clock, we’ve got to win the game,” Jones told reporters after the game. “Everybody in here gets paid to do a job and that’s what everybody needs to do.”

Jones wouldn’t go as far as to suggest Mike Nugent losing his job though did have some harsh words.

“I didn’t say that, but I said everybody gets paid to do a job,” he said. “So perform and do your job, that’s all I’m saying.”

Pac-Man does have a point, but it’s not as if he’s never blown coverage leading to a touchdown. The best thing about his job is that in most situations, if he’s to make a mistake it’s not going to automatically cost his team points (as a missed field goal will do).

It’s not as if Mike Nugent was smiling and laughing on the sidelines after the botched kick – he knew he messed up. Throwing salt into the wound isn’t going to help.
