There’s a good chance that at some point during your life, you’ve wondered if a professional referee or umpire was blind. Of course you suggest such a sentiment in jest though today that was actually the case, at least for a few moments as an NFL referee lost his contact during a game.
The odd moment took place just minutes into the game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Indianapolis Colts which required a short stoppage in play due to the lost contact.
Clearly unable to see as he needed, the referee made his way to the sidelines where members of the Indianapolis Colts medical staff greeted the refree with a mirror and apparently a replacement contact.
It’s probably not something you think of much (if ever) but it seems as if the home teams medical staff not only needs to have supplies ready for their players but also the NFL staff (namely referees) helping out in the game. Presumably the referee must give the medical staff an extra set of contacts before the game in case something like this is to happen.
It’s certainly not the first time we’ve seen something like this happen as many times Major League Baseball umpires need to have their contacts replaced due to dust and dirt, though an NFL referee needing some new eyes is a bit strange.
