The Cleveland Browns have shown interest in free agent tight end Jermaine Gresham.

As the second day of NFL free agency looms on, the Cleveland Browns are reportedly in the market for tight end Jermaine Gresham. This news comes on the heels of Jordan Cameron’s questionable future with the team. Should the talented TE bolt for another squad, the Browns would likely move forward in their pursuit of the aforementioned Gresham.

More from Cincinnati Bengals

A five year veteran out of Oklahoma, Gresham has put up solid and consistent numbers since entering the league back in 2010. Over that span, heĀ has averaged 56 catches, 544.4 yards, and 4.8Ā touchdowns per season for the Cincinnati Bengals.

While he might have a more polished career resume thus far, based on what we have seen, there is no question that Cameron has the higher ceiling.

Though he suffered a down year in 2014, as did virtually everyone associated with Cleveland, we caught a glimpse of Cameron’s true potential in 2013. That season he posted career highs with 80 receptions, 917 yards, and 7 touchdowns.

With consistent play behind center, and a refurbished offensive line, there is zero reason, at 26, that those results cannot be replicated or even improved upon. Therein lies the real issues themselves though.

Regardless of whom the team starts the 2015 season with at TE, there will be question marks at quarterback. Josh McCown, who currently stands as the preseason favorite to see the majority of snaps, is not a long term fix. He might not even be an interim solution.

There is also the matter of replacing Josh Gordon’s production at wide receiver; he is set to miss all of 2015 with a suspension due to alcohol use while enrolled in the league’s substance abuse program, where he was to be prohibited from consumption altogether.

The defense needs help defending the run (they ranked dead last in rushing defense in 2014). Outside of that, it is a pretty solid unit, placing 8th and 9th in pass defense (224.5) and points allowed per game (21.1) respectively last season.
