Kentucky Derby 2015 Field
By CM Towle
The 141st Run for the Roses is set to take place on Saturday at Churchill Downs, representing one of the most continuously contested sporting events in the United States.
Barring any further late scratches other than El Kabeir, who was scratched on Friday, a field of 19 horses will go forward at roughly 6:30 ET to contest the 141st Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Get your mint juleps ready and take a look at the field.
.Ocho Ocho Ocho is by Street Sense, trained by Jim Cassidy and ridden by Elvis Trujillio. No wins as a 3-year-old, he should be one of the pace setters early. Morning line odds are 50-1.
.Carpe Diem is by Giant’s Causeway, trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by John Velasquez. Has won some big races, but it’s largely been against average competition in slow times. Morning line odds are 8-1.
.Materiality is by Afleet Alex, trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Javier Castellano. Won the Florida Derby handily, but it was only his third start ever. Experience is a question. Morning line odds are 12-1.
.Tencendur is by Warrior’s Reward, trained by George Weaver and ridden by Manny Franco. Likely to be overlooked in this field, was second in the Wood Memorial. Morning line odds are 30-1.
.Danzig Moon is by Malibu Moon, trained by Mark Casse and ridden by Julien Laparoux. Winner of only a maiden and second place in the Blue Grass makes him unlikely. Morning line odds are 30-1.
,Mubtaahij is by Dubawi, trained by Mike de Kock and ridden by Christophe Soumillion. Dubai invader, recently won a $2 million race there by eight lengths. Morning line odds are 20-1.
.Dortmund is by Big Brown, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Martin Garcia. Has proven to be a battler in hard-fought races and is 6 for 6. Morning line odds are 3-1.
.Bolo is by Temple City, trained by Carla Gaines and ridden by Rafael Bejarano. He has only won on grass, beaten twice on dirt by Dortmund. Morning line odds are 30-1.
.Firing Line is by Line of David, trained by Simon Callaghan and ridden by Gary Stevens. Stevens is looking for his fourth Derby in this fast California colt who has been on the losing end of two photo finishes with Dortmund. Morning line odds are 12-1.
.International Star is by Fusaichi Pegasus, trained by Mike Maker and ridden by Miguel Mena. Speed in the field should help stretch running style. Morning line odds are 20-1.
.Itsaknockout is by Lemon Drop Kid trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Luis Saez. Won the Fountain of Youth through a controversial DQ, but then lost the Florida Derby by 21 lengths. Morning line odds are 30-1.
.Keen Ice is by Curlin, trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Kent Desormeaux. Likely too slow for this field. Morning line odds are 50-1.
.Frosted is by Tapit, trained by Kiaran McLaughlin and ridden by Joel Rosario. Won the Wood Memorial in his last start and stretch-running style could work here. Morning line odds are 15-1.
.War Story is by Northern Afleet, trained by Tom Amoss and ridden by Joe Talamo. Was second to International Star thrice at the Fair Grounds amid weak competition. Morning line odds are 50-1.
.Mr. Z is by Malibu Moon, trained by Wayne Lukas and ridden by Ramon Vazquez. Speedster likely overmatched by this field. Morning line odds are 50-1.
.American Pharoah is by Pioneerof The Nile, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Victor Espinoza. The cemented favorite due to winning the Arkansas Derby by eight lengths. Morning line odds are 5-2.
.Upstart is by Flatter, trained by Rick Violette and ridden by Jose Ortiz. Ran well in seven starts and speed figures are on par with favorites. Morning line odds are 15-1.
.Far Right is by Notional, trained by Ron Moquett and ridden by Mike Smith. Won weak stakes at Oaklawn before being trounced by American Pharoah. Morning line odds are 50-1.
.Frammento is by Midshipman, trained by Nick Zito and ridden by Corey Nakatani. Backed in due to scratch of Stanford. Probably won’t break Zito’s 21-year drought. Morning line odds are 50-1.
