Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland is the center of the horse racing world on the third Saturday in May with the second leg of the triple crown taking center stage for the Preakness Stakes.

The 1 3/16 miles race comes three weeks after the Kentucky Derby and two weeks before the Belmont Stakes and has been run since 1873 with a $1.5 million purse.

American Pharoah enters the Preakness Stakes as the heavy favorite after winning the Kentucky Derby earlier this month. The horse trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert has 4-5 odds in the eight horse field but drew the No. 1 post which drew the ire of Baffert.

“I don’t like the inside,” Baffert said, via NOLA.com. “I never like the one-hole. Sometimes they don’t break as well. When I was watching the draw and all these numbers were coming up, I go, ‘This is not looking good.’ I’m just glad I didn’t draw that for the Derby.”

Only one horse in the last 54 years has won the Preakness from the pole position. American Pharoah started on the outside in the Derby and chased down the leaders from the outside, so if he’s to win the Preakness he’ll have to adapt to his surroundings.

Challenging American Pharoah in the Preakness are Firing Line and Dortmund who finished second and third, respectively, in the Derby and have the second and third best odds at winning the race.

  • American Pharoah: 4-5
  • Dortmund: 7-2
  • Mr. Z: 20-1
  • Danzig Moon: 15-1
  • Tale of Verve: 30-1
  • Bodhisattva: 20-1
  • Divining Rod: 12-1
  • Firing Line: 4-1
