America tuned into the Belmont Stakes on Saturday hoping to see American Pharoah be the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. Were they able to get the historic run from him or did the longest drought extend one more year?

If you’re a casual horse racing fan like I am, you likely tuned in for the 147th running of the Belmont Stakes with one thing on your mind. Will this be the year we see a Triple Crown winner.

I have waited my entire life to see a superhorse come along and win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in a span of five weeks and enter horse racing immortality and a lifetime of oats, carrots and mating.

Many horses have come close with 23 horses before American Pharoah winning the first two legs but fell short in the 1.5 mile long Belmont, appropriately nicknamed The Test of the Champion. Since Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978 there have been 13 other horses to join American Pharoah with a win at Belmont Park away from horse racing infamy, but fell victim to the grueling race.

American Pharoah was the favorite to win the race, so the odds were in the favor of the Bob Baffert-trained three-year-old horse

In the end, the horse was able to pull off the historic feat and win the Belmont and be the 12th horse to win the Triple Crown and end the 37-year drought.

Here’s a sampling of the outpouring of emotions and reactions from winning the Belmont Stakes:
