DraftKings MLB Picks For May 8

We have ten teams off and ten games playing on Monday. Both the Cubs and Yankees are in action tonight. Will their lineups be affected by last night (and this morning’s) 18 inning affair? The Cubs are at Coors, so this bears watching. As does the weather in Denver. That is the only game threatened by rain today.

More from DFS

The money line for the late slate was at 111.25 yesterday. My avoidance of Coors helped me survive a poor start from Daniel Norris to finish well in the money. It was a good weekend even though only one of my two lineups placed. Placing well in the money helped us come out a little ways ahead. Let’s see if we can keep that going!

The winning lineup was only at 179.2 DraftKings points. He had the shutout from Scott Feldman and the strikeouts from Johnny Cueto as a great foundation. The two homer day from Yunel Escobar at 1.7% ownership won him the prize.

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players. Check out this post from Matt McGarvey for great tips about whether to use a hot player in DFS or not.

May 3, 2017; Bronx, NY, USA; Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Marcus Stroman (6) pitches against the New York Yankees during the first inning at Yankee Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

P: Jacob deGrom ($10,800): Yeah, the career numbers of the Giants against deGrom are pretty solid, but this team got shut out by Scott Feldman at a hitter’s park yesterday. They are only hitting .224 against deGrom on 49 at bats with no homers and 11 strikeouts, but they have scored seven runs. I wont worry too much about that right now. Scott Feldman, he of the 4.83 ERA going into yesterday’s game, shut them out. That’s worth mentioning again.

P: Marcus Stroman ($9,400): The team is saying that Stroman’s arm is fine after being lifted on Wednesday with arm soreness after just three innings. Cleveland is hitting just .217 against Stroman is 52 at bats with just one extra base hit (a Carlos Santana double) and only three runs with 13 strikeouts. Those numbers border on dominant. If his arm truly is fine, Stroman could have a very good night.

C:  Matt Wieters ($3,600): Wieters is heading back up the Beltway to a place he called home for the first several years of his career. It’s his first game back, and the Nats will have a DH against Kevin Gausman. A Nats stack, full sized or mini, is not a bad idea. They are hitting .368 against Gausman in 38 career at bats.

1B: Yonder Alonso ($2,800): Alonso is only 6-21(.286) against Ricky Nolasco, but he has three walks, a double, a homer, two runs scored, and five RBI against him in his career. Nolasco owns a 4.68 ERA, and has not pitched well against the current A’s in his career. I am going with a cheap A’s stack, even in that cavernous ballpark they call home.

2B: Dee Gordon ($4,000): Gordon is 9-17(.529) with two walks, a double, two runs scored, two steals, and a RBI against Carlos Martinez. Gordon has a .518 wOBA vs. Martinez, and could pick up quite a few points with his speed tonight.

3B: Ryon Healy ($3,300): Healy is 5-12 with a double, a homer, and two RBI already against Nolasco. Healy hit the walk off winner yesterday afternoon. What will he do for an encore against Ricky Nolasco?

SS: Elvis Andrus ($3,600): Andrus is 11-42(.262) with three walks, three doubles, three runs scored, three stolen bases, and  a RBI. I am chasing steals as a cheap source of points with my Oakland stack. This will probably be an all or nothing lineup, but I’m okay with that.

OF: Bryce Harper ($5,400): All signs point towards Harper returning to the lineup tonight. You may have to follow to make sure, but if he is in there, I want him in my lineup. He is 2-5 with a walk and a run scored against Gausman so far. Expect a few RBI to be on tap for him tonight.

OF: Carlos Gonzalez ($4,500): CarGo is 3-9 with a homer, two runs scored, and two RBI in his career against Jake Arrieta. Arrieta actually pinch hit last night for the Cubs in that marathon game. That likely wont affect his pitching, but getting into Denver at 5am might….

OF: Matt Joyce ($2,400): Joyce is 5-15 with a walk, two doubles, two homers, four runs scored, and five RBI in his career against Ricky Nolasco. He is at or near the top of the A’s order every game. If the A’s touch up Nolasco, there is a great chance Joyce will be involved, and this price is right!

DraftKings
Apr 21, 2017; San Diego, CA, USA; San Diego Padres starting pitcher Trevor Cahill (38)pitches during the first inning against the Miami Marlins at Petco Park. Mandatory Credit: Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

P: Carlos Martinez ($9,800): The Marlins have hit Carlos Martinez well so far, but I am going to trust Martinez’s numbers on the year more than the past stats for this one. He has a 3.75 ERA and 43 strikeouts in just 36 innings pitched. His poor start against the Reds in the second game of the season is skewing his numbers. Martinez also has a great shot at a win with Adam Conley starting for the Marlins tonight.

More from FanSided

P: Trevor Cahill ($7,600): The Rangers are hitting a respectable .250 against Cahill in 80 at bats from his time in the AL West, but they only have six runs scored and no home runs. Cahill has ramped up the strikeouts this year, and while the Rangers may get a few runs against him, they will strike out plenty and he has a great chance at a win against Nick Martinez. Cahill could be underpriced yet again!

C: Yasmani Grandal ($3,400): With Jameson Taillon on the DL, the Pirates have reached into their bullpen for Trevor Williams. I want some exposure to this! I will start with a well-rested Grandal for this cheap.

1B: Cody Bellinger ($3,600): I will follow that up with Bellinger as the main course. He is now eligible at first base, which is another plus. He will slow down at some point, but at this price, it would be foolish not to try him in at least one lineup.

2B: Starlin Castro ($3,800): I realize that the Yankees played until 1am Central last night. However, the flight to Cincinnati is a short one, so they shouldn’t have any problems getting ready for this one. I expect guys like Matt Holliday and Austin Romine to be held out, but the younger ones should be good to go. And I am definitely stacking against Rookie Davis again.

3B: Chase Headley ($3,700): The stack against Rookie Davis with Pirates didn’t work last week, but the Yankees just swept the World Champions at Wrigley while scoring a ton of runs. Davis’s 7.36 ERA will likely go up after the one.

SS: Didi Gregorius ($3,800): Headley and Gregorius are in there because that right field porch is nearly as favorable as the one in Yankee Stadium. And they practically have a batting practice pitcher on the mound for them.

OF: Giancarlo Stanton ($4,400): Stanton is 2-4 with a walk, a double, a homer, three runs scored, and two RBI against Carlos Martinez so far. A Stanton homer would cost Martinez three points. It would net Stanton 14. I will take that trade off.

OF: Aaron Judge ($4,600): Judge had a good series against the Cubs. Left field isn’t as generous as right field at Great American Ballpark, but Judge hits baseballs a long, long ways. There is a great chance that he gets a hold of a Rookie Davis offering tonight.

OF: Mike Trout ($5,300): Trout says that he will be good to go tonight. I hope he is right because Trout is 8-24 with a double, a homer, six runs scored, and three RBI against Kendall Graveman in his career. He has even stolen a base!
