Is Phil Mickelson playing The Masters 2023?
Phil Mickelson is a three-time champion at The Masters but, with his move to LIV Golf, is Lefty going to be playing Augusta National in 2023?
Golf fans have so many iconic memories of Phil Mickelson. The most recent was surely his win at the 2021 PGA Championship at 50 years old, an unlikely hero story. But his history at The Masters is equally as rich with three career victories, including his first major championship win in 2004.
Things have changed for Phil Mickelson since that 2021 win at Kiawah. Lefty has become a proverbial pariah in the golfing world due to, among other things, his departure to join LIV Golf and controversial comments to the media. So as the week of The Masters is upon us, that’s been a shadow hanging over things.
Of course, as a three-time Masters champion, Mickelson is qualified for life at Augusta National. But with LIV Golf members banned from the PGA Tour and with Lefty skipping some of the majors last year, some golf fans might be asking if Phil Mickelson will be playing The Masters this year.
Is Phil Mickelson playing The Masters 2023?
Because Augusta National Golf Club is not the same governing body as the PGA Tour, Phil Mickelson will indeed be playing in The Masters, as will every other member of LIV Golf who is qualified.
Mickelson elected not to play at Augusta National in 2022 as that was at the height of the scrutiny surrounding the now-52-year-old. His last start was in 2021, when he finished T21. He has not finished in the Top 15 at The Masters since 2015.
For this year’s trip to Augusta National, Mickelson has been grouped with Tom Hoge and Si Woo Kim for the first two rounds. They will tee off at 12:24 p.m. ET on Thursday for the first round and 9:12 a.m. ET on Friday for the second round.
