With Adam Wainwright on the mound for the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 1, fans had to be feeling pretty confident and with good reason. Wainwright, who won 19 games during the regular season has been even more impressive during the Cardinals’ postseason run to the World Series.

Unfortunately for Cardinals faithful, their ace didn’t have it tonight and almost appeared to be mentally some place else as the normally solid fielding Wainwright had an inexcusable brain blunder in the early innings.

In the third inning, the Boston Red Sox hit a small pop up which was falling right between Wainwright and catcher Yadier Molina. The fly ball wasn’t exactly towering, but it certainly had enough loft for somebody to get under it. That person would presumably be Wainwright, as he was closest to the ball and was seen looking at it during its entire flight.

Only problem? Wainwright never made a play on the ball.
