Carolina Panthers safety Roman Harper bought a Panthers-themed Lamborghini recently.

Roman Harper began his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints, spending the first eight years of his professional career wearing the black and gold before he was released by the Saints on February 12, 2014.

Barely over a month later, on March 15, he signed a five-year, $10.625 million contract with an NFC South rival, the Carolina Panthers. Almost 13 months to do the day, Harper showed that he is now a Panther through and through.

The 32-year-old safety from Alabama tweeted Tuesday a picture of a new Lamborghini, quite obviously inspired by the colors of his new NFC South team. We’re assuming since he tweet out the photon that this is in fact his car.

In his eight years in the Crescent City, Harper was noted and praised for his work in the community, while he was also a key member of the Saints’ Super Bowl championship team in the 2009 season.

But he was certainly not without his detractors and critics–especially for his play against the pass.

And so, as is so often the case with fans in New Orleans, his release last offseason was met a bittersweet kind of attitude. On the one hand, they loved Harper for his attitude and commitment to the black and gold.

On the other, they were happy to rid themselves of a one-dimensional safety whose best season came in 2011 when he had an incredible 7.5 sacks. That season will be remembered for that fact that he couldn’t come anywhere close to covering San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis in one of the most memorable NFC Divisional Round games in the last decade–a heartbreaking loss for the Saints.

But when the photo of Harper’s new Lamborghini hits papers and the eyes of New Orleans Saints fans everywhere, gone will be the admiration, even from afar. A new level hatred will likely take hold for Saints fans in regards to Harper.

Harper made over $1.5 million a season ago for Carolina, and is set to make another $1.8 million this year.

It’s a good thing since a custom Lamborghini starts in the low three hundred thousands. Doubtless Harper is paying well beyond that for the custom detailing.

More importantly for Harper, let’s hope that his level of play stays up to par through this season. He is at the age where he could easily be a camp cut if the Panthers find someone who fills his role adequately.

And man, he’d look awfully naive and dumb if he were to get cut after making such a purchase. As it is now, his being cut quickly might be the only thing to bring any joy to a Saints fan heart in regards to their former safety.
