The Kansas City Chiefs have finally granted mercy on quarterback Matt Cassel and released him from the team. After several failed attempts to trade the former New England Patriots and his hefty contract, Kansas City had no choice but to hand him his walking papers.

ESPN Boston’s Field Yates, who previously contributed to FanSided’s NFL Spin Zone, helped spread the news today:

With Cassel now available in free agency, the Minnesota Vikings are considered a team to closely watch.

Minnesota was interested in Cassel when the Chiefs were looking to trade him, so there is no reason to believe that he will not be on their radar now that he available on the open market.

Cassel would provide some solid competition for Christian Ponder.
