The New England Patriots fell just short of the Super Bowl this year and couldn’t have been pleased watching the Denver Broncos get spanked by the Seattle Seahawks. Not only did the Patriots lose to the Broncos, but the team probably thinks they would have stood a better chance against the Seahawks than the Broncos did, even if that’s not true.

Now that they’re in offseason mode, the Patriots are looking at ways they can make themselves better next season and one place to start is the linebacking corps. New England has a decision to make when it comes to free agent Brandon Spikes, as the team may let him walk this offseason.

ESPNBoston blogger Field Yates notes that the Patriots are prepared to let Spikes walk at least roster-wise, as they have a trio of linebackers who could step up and fill in for Spikes.

"While Spikes is among the most notable free agents for the Patriots this offseason, a departure by the former second-round pick would not be crippling to this defense. With Mayo as the anchor and Hightower and Collins to flank him, the Patriots have a trio of solid front-line players."

What the Patriots do will be something to watch, as Spikes won’t last long if he hits the open market in March.
