This play went from heads-up to disastrous to even-more-heads-up in the space of a few seconds. The Pirates attempt a bunt but the execution is miserable. The Cardinals’ Matt Carpenter, thinking he can start a double play, lets the bad bunt drop and throws to second.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals had a defensive play on that meant no one was covering second. In a display of heads-up baseball that can only be called Jeter-like, Jon Jay runs in from center field and collects the ill-advised throw in time to get the force out.

Shades of Jeter flashing in to cut off the throw in the ALCS against the A’s and flip to the plate to get Jeremy Giambi. Jon Jay showed that kind of awareness. Good thing too or there would have been chaos for the Cardinals.

Carpenter thought he was doing something really heads-up there but he never should’ve thrown to second in that situation. He got bailed out by his teammate on that one. That’s got to be worth at least a new watch.

Some sort of gift is in order for Jon Jay.
