Bloody scene Saturday night from the Angels-Rangers game. The Angels’ Collin Cowgill was attempting to lay down a bunt but missed the ball and was struck on the bridge of the nose.

More from Los Angeles Angels

Cowgill immediately headed for the dugout, bleeding profusely from the nose. The Angels say Cowgill received stitches and was taken straight to the hospital.

Though the ball struck Cowgill in the face, the pitch was ruled a foul ball as it appeared to ricochet before hitting Cowgill. Efred Navarro came in to finish the at bat and drew a walk.

Upon close inspection of the video replay, it appears the ball may actually have hit Cowgill in the thumb before striking him in the face. If so, it should have been rulled a HBP instead of a strike.

Cowgill is listed as day-to-day by the Angels. He is currently hitting .273/.344/.403 with 5 HR and 16 RBI. Hopefully his face and thumb will both be okay. It would suck to get hit in the face by a baseball hard enough to open up a gushing wound only to find out your thumb is actually messed up worse.

Oh, and bunting is stupid.
