Swapped Headlines, NBA Edition: Drake predicts Sixth Man Of The Year
By Lauren Lapka
Ever feel like you’re reading an article and the headline doesn’t accurately reflect the content. Well we look at some of the biggest stories in sports and come up with some headlines we think might be better suited to the actual story.
“Racist Jerks Prepare for game 1”
Heading into Game 1 of their NBA Playoffs series against the Memphis Grizzlies, the Portland Trail Blazers mentally prepared themselves in their locker room. A locker room that just so happened to feature a laminated card that read “We don’t lose to Spanish players.”
The Spanish player they are sure to be referencing is Grizzlies’ Marc Gasol. An All-Star center and one of the NBA’s well known Spanish players. Karma must have come into play, because the Trail Blazers fell 100-86 toe the Grizzlies in Game 1.
“Mr. Excuses tries to rationalize game 1 loss”
Following their Game 1 loss to the Golden State Warriors, New Orleans Pelicans coach Monty Williams seems to be indirectly blaming their performance on the noise level in Oracle Arena.
Before Game 2 on Monday, Williams said, “I’m not so sure they decibel level is legal, and I’m serious.” He went on to argue how people have done studies on the matter. Although Oracle Arena is considered one of the loudest home venues in sports, any mention of the sound shouts “excuse” to fans like myself.
“Pat Riley: I miss LeBron/I wish LeBron was here”
Miami Heat president Pat Riley is hurting big after the 2014-15 season. As if a 37-45 record wasn’t enough, missing the NBA Playoffs after reaching the finals last year is salt in the wound for this organization.
“There’s not a person in the organization that doesn’t think we should have made the playoffs,” said Riley.
There was still plenty of talent on the team after the loss of LeBron in the offseason, but injuries took a few of them away. Josh McRoberts was out for the whole year after a knee injury early on in the season. During the All-Star break, Chris Bosh discovered blood clots in his lungs. Dwyane Wade was out about a fourth of the season because of two different hamstring injuries.
“Man arrested after Jordan/Lebron argument..first of many to come”
Daniel Mondelice, 22, was arrested for aggravated assault and other charges following an argument over whether Lebron James or Michael Jordan is a better basketball player. The Centre Daily Times reported that the arrest came early Saturday morning. It is unclear who Mondelice was pro Lebron or Jordan.
After being released on bond, he went to stay with a woman at an apartment. But he ended up back in police custody after they received a call there Saturday night. Mondelice was argumentative and refused to leave the premises. He was unable to post bail and remained in jail as of Monday, according to online court records.
“Drake predicts future, Toronto’s Lou Williams picks up 6th man of the year award”
“Boomin’ out in South Gwinnett like Lou Will. 6 man like Lou Will, 2 girls and they get along like I’m… (Louuuu)” -Drake, 6 Man
Canadian rapper Drakes prediction came true monday as Toronto Raptors guard Lou Williams was named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year. He received 78 of the possible 130 first-place votes trumped Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas and Clippers guard Jamal Crawford.
Williams was picked up in the offseason from Atlanta; a move that was mostly about clearing up some cap space. Many worried if he would rebound from his 2013 ACL tear, including him.
“I didn’t think I was going to be the same player. I knew I wasn’t going to have the foot speed I once had, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to jump as high. But it taught me to be smart and I worked on different parts of my game,” said Williams.
Needless to say, he came back better than ever. Williams averaged a career-high 15.5 points in 80 games.
