Washington Redskins fans breathe a sigh of relief. For once in recent memory you have a general manager who has a clue what he’s doing. While Scott McCloughlan may have his demons away from football, he certainly has a mind and deft understanding of how to evaluate and select football players.

He’s also much more patient than you might expect if you know his story. As a large part of the team that built the rosters in San Francisco and Seattle in recent years, one thing is almost certain: he’ll allow the draft to come to him.

Don’t expect a panic trade to move up to get “your guy”. Instead, expect McCloughlan to trust his board, and take the best player available. Of course no evaluator and decision-maker is perfect. He likely won’t hit every pick he makes in this draft.

But his picks will be logical, and will be solid football decisions. They will not be impacted by owner Dan Snyder, and they may not be flashy. They will, however, involve sound football strategy.

And they may not turn the Redskins around in one season. But the situation there is pretty dire, so turning that thing around would take a miracle worker. McCloughlan is the next best thing.

This franchise’s direction will start to unfold this weekend, and it will likely begin to resemble the direction other successful franchises have taken in rebuilding situations.

Again, patience is key. It probably will not be sexy. But it will be smart. And it will eventually work.
