University of New Hampshire Michael McCann is offering a course in Deflategate and other legal topics

Professor Michael McCann, a regular legal analyst for Sports Illustrated and NBA TV, announced that he will be offering a new course this fall at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), simply entitled Deflategate.

The football world has been set ablaze this week with the release of Wells Report, which found “more probable than not that Tom Brady… was at least generally aware of the inappropriate activities… involving the release of air from Patriots game balls.” Fortunately (or unfortunately if you’re really a fan of actual footballs), the class will not solely cover Deflategate but rather how government, sports media and the law all interact, using Deflategate as an exemplar instance.

Michael McCann hopes that the class title will keep undergrads interested.

Who knows how difficult a grader McCann is, but the reading for the class might be enough to dissuade potential students. The Wells Report, which documents Brady’s and the rest of the Patriots’ involvement in the scandal, is a 240+ page monster and who knows what other reading material might supplement it.

If sports law interests you, then it might be worth following McCann on twitter @McCannSportsLaw. In the last week, McCann has been offering some interesting nuggets of insight into current sports law related topic, like Jameis Winston’s counter-suit against Erica Kinsman, who accused him of sexual battery back in 2012. McCann also gave a radio interview on 93.7 Boston on what the class will cover and other various topics.

Deflategate has pervaded the public consciousness this week. It should be interesting to see how Brady formally responds to the report and what it means for the rest of the Patriots organization.
