The Miami Dolphins did the right thing by locking up Ryan Tannehill with a big extension.

When the Miami Dolphins doled out a six-year, $96 million contract extension to quarterback Ryan Tannehill, many observers were apoplectic. The reaction from some experts was positively Vizzini-like. It’s understandable that Tannehill’s new extension would cause a little unease for those who haven’t actually followed his career closely, but in reality Miami did the right thing.

More from Miami Dolphins

After the Dolphins made Tannehill the eighth pick in the 2012 NFL Draft they immediately handed him the reins of the franchise. While things were a bit dodgy at first, he has slowly matured into a legitimate NFL quarterback. Now heading into his second season in offensive coordinator Bill Lazor’s quarterback-friendly system, Tannehill appears poised to build on the breakout season he had in 2014.

Fans and experts need to realize that just because Tannehill isn’t Andrew Luck or Tom Brady doesn’t mean he can’t be an outstanding NFL signal-caller. In his first three NFL seasons the Texas native has developed steadily, and now the Dolphins have actually begun surrounding him with talent.

What follows is a list of reasons why the Dolphins did the right thing in locking Tannehill up. When you come to the end, hopefully you will understand that there was virtually no downside in doing so.
