Once this NFL season comes to a close, there are plenty of teams that will be in the market for a new quarterback.

A quarterback is the focal point of just about any team that’s competitive in the playoffs. Without a leader in a quarterback, it’s next to impossible to win many games, and hard to have any success at all in the playoffs. Looking at past great franchises and Super Bowl winners, they all have great leaders under center.

The New England Patriots have had Tom Brady throwing for them for years, the Green Bay Packers have Aaron Rodgers, and the non-competitive Carolina Panthers have Cam Newton. The bottom line is that a quarterback is important.

Some teams looking for a quarterback look towards the NFL draft to find a rookie answer, but the options don’t always cut it. For teams looking for an older, veteran quarterback, free agency is undoubtedly the better route.

Although franchise-level quarterbacks typically are re-signed or traded before they go to the open market, there is the rare case that teams can find a leader in free agency.

Finding a quarterback that can lead in the playoffs seems at times impossible in free agency, but it’s been done before. Brett Favre was signed by the Minnesota Vikings in free agency, and nearly led them to a Super Bowl run in 2009.

Sometimes it just takes a bit of looking, and these options are very plausible to be available this offseason.
