The Florida Panthers are reportedly working on an eight-year contract extension with pending restricted free agent center Aleksander Barkov.

The Florida Panthers have been one of the most exciting teams in the NHL to watch over the past two seasons. A huge part of that has been the development and growth of center Aleksander Barkov. The 20-year-old Finnish center is on pace to shatter his career highs in every major offensive category with 23 points in 27 games played this season. An important part of the Panthers future revolves around locking up Barkov long-term. The team is allegedly trying to work out an extension with him that would keep him in a Panthers uniform for the next eight seasons.

This should be a fairly big extension since the Panthers would be buying out at least four of Barkov’s free agent years. On the open market, Barkov would likely command a huge salary. It’s an extension that will likely happen. The Panthers know that they need to extend him and Aleksander Barkov would likely love to have some job security.

While there is some risk involved in signing a 20-year-old center to an eight-year extension, the rewards are undoubtedly much better than the risks involved. A Barkov extension could also help keep the Panthers in Florida, as it would show their fans that they have a clear commitment to winning. It’s something that would benefit both the Panthers and Barkov.
