Winter Classic: Boston Bruins vs. Montreal Canadiens
Since 2008, New Year’s Day has become an annual tradition for the NHL to showcase the Bridgestone Winter Classic. So far, it’s been a massive success as the ratings are always high and the attendance is always sold out. 7 different cities have hosted an outdoor game, and this is the second time Boston will be the home team. The best atmosphere was probably in 2014 when Leafs and Red Wings fans sold out the Big House. This time, the NHL will go to the home of the New England Patriots to see the oldest and best rivalry in the league, the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins, square off.
The two teams will come into this game trending in opposite directions. The Canadiens have lost 7 of their last 8 games and only have 3 wins in the month of December. Having once had a stranglehold on the Atlantic division, they’ve now fallen to second place behind the Panthers. It’s clear that they miss their star goalie Carey Price.
The Bruins have been up-and-down, having won three and then lost three. They snapped their most recent losing streak with a 7-3 win over the Ottawa Senators and sit in third in the Atlantic division, trailing the Habs by just one point. Even though this game is always intense, it’ll have an added sense of importance because of the teams’ place in the standings.
Even with Brad Marchand being suspended, the Bruins will like their chances because of Montreal’s recent slump. However, the Canadiens always show up to play against the Bruins. Montreal has dominated this rivalry in recent years, winning their last playoff meeting, but the Bruins came out on top 3-1 winners in their last regular season game. No matter how poorly the teams play, this game is always guaranteed to have fireworks so no matter how hungover you are, don’t miss this one.
