We are officially one week out from Super Bowl 50 – crazy to think that it’s been 50 years since Bart Starr and Vince Lombardi put it to Len Dawson and Hank Stram, creating a global spectacle in the process.

And while competitive football takes its first break since late-summer or early-fall, fear not, viewers. We are not without pigskin in our lives. That’s right, this week is the annual Pro Bowl, which takes place in lovely Hawaii.

There’s always a fair amount of snark heading into this exhibition game, as the originally planned lineups look like gutted fish by the time teams take the field  – a record number of players were invited to the festivities this year. But still, what’s better: no football, or barely competitive football with “modern-day gladiators” having a bit of fun. Exactly – we’ll take whatever we can get.

Last year, Michael Irvin’s team took down Cris Carter’s club by a score of 32-28. Now Irvin will have to go up against Jerry Rice, whose squad won in 2013. One of these coaches will leave the game with their first loss. Manufactured drama, but still …
