NBA Rumors: Memphis Grizzlies pursuing Frank Vogel?

Will the Memphis Grizzles hire Frank Vogel as their next head coach?

The Memphis Grizzles are moving on as they fired head coach Dave Joerger earlier this morning. Joerger and the front office didn’t get along and Joerger had sought permission to interview for other coaching positions according to Yahoo Sports Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Grizzles are going in a different direction and are going after former Indiana Pacers head coach Frank Vogel according to Wojnarowski.

Vogel replaced Jim O’Brien in Indiana back in 2010 and led the Pacers to the playoffs in every season since but 2014-15 after Paul George broke his leg playing for Team USA.

Vogel is a target of other teams, like the New York Knicks, so if Memphis does want him, they will have to act quickly.

Vogel focused more on defense and didn’t push the pace quite like Larry Bird wanted. He wanted to play more small ball and that’s something Vogel didn’t do.

With Memphis, he won’t have to focus on that with Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol in the front court.

The question for Memphis is will free agent point guard Mike Conley want to play for Vogel. Conley will be a target of many teams this off-season and Memphis wants to retain him. The team also has an option on Lance Stephenson. If Vogel comes to Memphis, will they want to retain him?

There is no doubt though that if they hire Vogel, they will be getting a quality head coach and someone who can help Memphis make the playoffs again in a tough Western Conference.
