Mike Tirico move to NBC Sports officially announced
By Jason Parker
Mike Tirico, who has spent the last 10 seasons as the voice of Monday Nigh Football on ESPN, will join NBC Sports in July and cover multiple sports.
In recent weeks, news surfaced that one of the longest serving play-by-play men in the history or primetime NFL coverage would be heading to a new home. Monday, the news was made official that Mike Tirico would be leaving ESPN’s Monday Night Football for a new spot at NBC Sports.
Tirico, who has spent the last 25 years with ESPN and has covered a variety of sports ranging from college and pro football and basketball to golf and soccer, will start with the network on July 1st and be on display for their coverage of the Summer Olympics in August from Brazil:
"“I am thrilled to join this outstanding team,” Tirico said. “For me, NBC Sports has always represented the highest quality in television sports production and the chance to now be a part of that, is a dream come true. It is a perfect time in my career to take on new opportunities, and I am excited to do that with an exceptional group of people.”"
According to the press release from NBC Sports Group, Tirico will work on the network’s Thursday and Sunday Night Football packages (reportedly as the play-by-play man for the first group) as well as the Olympics and the network’s golf coverage, as well as other select events.
Mike Tirico, a graduate of Syracuse University, started as an anchor on SportsCenter when he first joined ESPN before moving into the booth as a play-by-play man, starting with golf in 1996 and adding the NBA and college basketball for both ESPN and ABC starting in 2002.
Tirico’s departure is another big name that ESPN has lost in recent weeks, a list that includes controversial First Take co-host Skip Bayless, who reportedly is heading to a position at rival network FOX Sports 1. No word on if Tirico will have any assignments with NBC Sports Network, the cable outlet for NBC Universal.
