Joe Thornton and David Backes had a pretty epic beard pulling battle during Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals.

It’s only Game 1, but the San Jose Sharks and the St. Louis Blues already have some bad blood. Blues captain David Backes and former Sharks captain Joe Thornton participated in a battle of the beards when they started pulling on each other’s awesome beards during a scrum. The beards are always off limits, so things are getting pretty serious in Game 1.

That’s a pretty awesome beard by Thornton, but come on Backes. If you want to make a statement, man up and challenge Brent Burns to a beard pulling battle. The two sides already had bad blood because the last time the Sharks and Blues squared off in the Western Conference Finals, they had a pretty epic brawl.

Ironically, one of the participants in that brawl was defenseman Roman Polak, who was playing for the Blues at the time. He is currently a member of the Sharks. The Blues and the Sharks are currently tied at one goal a piece after 20 minutes. Backes scored a power play goal but the Sharks answered with a goal by Joe Pavelski. Quite a series already brewing between the two teams.
