The St. Louis Blues were able to defend their home ice advantage in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals by beating the San Jose Sharks 2-1.

In Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals between the St. Louis Blues and the San Jose Sharks at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri, the Blues capitalized on their home ice advantage with a  2-1 win over the Sharks. The Blues got goals from their captain David Backes and forward Jori Lehtera, who scored the go-ahead goal in the second period, and San Jose got a goal from Tomas Hertl.

The Sharks got just three power plays in their Game 1 loss. Despite a beard-tugging incident, the game was quite tame, with only five penalties. The Blues were the ninth-most penalized team in the regular season and they’ve got the second-most minutes in the postseason, though they’ve already played more games than any other team in the playoffs. For a team that dominates the power play, this lack of opportunities kept the Sharks from playing their A-game, which they expect to bring tonight to balance the series.

The Blues, though they won the opening, maintain that there is more work to be done. They were outshot in Game 1 32-23 and were successful yet again due to the tremendous effort of goalie Brian Elliott. Currently he is 4-0 with a 1.29 goals-against average and .954 save percentage in five career playoff games against the Sharks.
