Klay Thompson forced to leave Game 3 in first quarter after a collision and the injury sent him back to the locker room

In the Western Conference Finals for the Golden State Warriors, Klay Thompson came up huge for the defending champions on more than one occasion. That hadn’t quite been the case in Games 1 and 2 of the 2016 NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, though, even with Golden State going up 2-0 in the series. However, having Klay Thompson step up as the Warriors went on the road would’ve been huge for them. A bad collision in the first quarter may have ended any chance of that, though.

As the Cavaliers jumped out to a massive lead in the first quarter behind the efforts of Kyrie Irving, Thompson was trying to slow him down by playing him tight on defense. As he was doing so, though, Klay was led right into a hard screen from Timofey Mozgov and the center’s knee appeared to go right into the guard’s thigh.

Thompson went right to the ground in obvious pain after the play and tried to get right back up. When he did so, though, he couldn’t stand it and asked Steve Kerr to come out of the game before going right back to the locker room.

That he went directly to the back isn’t a great sign, but we’ll have to see if he’s there to get a quick fix and treatment or if Klay Thompson is out for some time.

Update

It appears Klay is back on the bench and you’d assume that means he’s coming back. We’ll see if the injury affects his play.
