The Kansas City Chiefs shocked many loyal fans when they couldn’t get a deal done with Eric Berry, 2015 Comeback Player of the Year. Now, Berry might not make it to the Chiefs at all.

Eric Berry got slightly burned by the Chiefs after the Chiefs reportedly asked him to pay for his own disability policy that would make the team its beneficiary. Berry declined, and contract negotiations stalled after that. The Chiefs still have one more year to sign Berry to a long-term contract, but they might have used up the Pro Bowler’s patience.

If Berry isn’t attending training camp, it’s a pretty clear message to the Chief’s top brass that he isn’t screwing around with this. He won’t receive a fine because he hasn’t signed his franchise tag, but that doesn’t mean this still isn’t a pointed act.

Berry has been vocal about wanting to remain a Chief, so hopefully this galvanizes the team into action when the next free agency period rolls around. Eric Berry is more than a comeback player, he’s one of the best safeties in the entire NFL. He beat the crap out of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma to come back and make a Pro Bowl the very next year.

This is a man that the Chiefs can’t pass on. It’s unknown what Berry plans to do if his message isn’t heard, but if he’s going to remain with the Chiefs, he has to be paid. It’s not probably that Berry sits out for several games in the regular season, but it’s possible, and it’s looking more probable with everything we hear about his contract negotiations.
