Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak appears ready to name Trevor Siemian the official successor to Peyton Manning’s throne.

It’s only the third week of the preseason, but already the Denver Broncos appear ready to make a decision that could end their season before it starts. In a decision that hasn’t yet been made official, it appears that all signs are pointing towards Trevor Siemian being named the Week 1 starter for the team.

Before you get all hot and bothered, Gary Kubiak hasn’t officially said anything nor has he tipped his hand. But playing it close to the chest verbally is different from showing the world what you’re thinking in the first batch of preseason games. Siemian started his second straight game of the preseason on Saturday, and actually didn’t look that bad. Now, with the start of the season looming, it might officially be Siemian Season in Denver.

According to Kubiack, via ESPN:

"“I’ve got a lot invested and a lot of work that I can make some decisions off of now. I’ll do that. Does that mean I’m going to do it [Sunday] or Monday? I don’t know. I’ve got enough going on that I can make a decision.”"

While he didn’t name names, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out what he’s talking about here. Siemian looked pretty decent in his two starts, and while it was just the preseason, the Broncos don’t have many other options.

They passed on the opportunity to acquire Colin Kaepernick this offseason and instead traded for Mark Sanchez. The team also drafted Paxton Lynch in the first-round of the NFL Draft this spring but aren’t ready to give him the reigns.

Instead it looks like the joke of Trevor Siemian being the Broncos starters is soon to be reality. Avowed Chiefs nut Matt Verderame joked endlessly in the office that the Broncos are so clueless that they’ll name Siemian the starter. Granted, this was closer to when Manning retired and the Broncos then bungled the Brock Osweiler free agency situation, but it now has all come full circle.

That damnedest thing is that Siemian might actually work out for the Broncos. He has all the makings of being the type of mid-level star to have come out of nowhere to shock the world. Of course, it’s only the preseason, but Siemian’s time to prove himself as a starter in the NFL appears to be now.
