The 100: The future of Octavia after A Lie Guarded

After seeing Octavia escape certain death in “A Lie Guarded,” let’s go over some lingering questions involving her and other characters in The 100.

In the latest episode of The 100, the show forced us to hold our breath after a major event took place. During an Echo-led pursuit for Octavia, a standoff occurred pitting one warrior against three. Octavia easily disposed of the two soldiers accompanying Echo, but a more enduring fight took place between the two. After an exciting back and forth exchange, Echo ended up stabbing Octavia through the left side of her stomach. Octavia then plummeted off the side of a cliff and down to the water below.

At this point, we assumed that she’s dead. However, by the end of the show, we saw a horse approach a body at the cliff’s bottom — and it was Octavia. She was clearly not dead yet as she responded to the horse approaching her. After struggling to boost herself onto the horse’s back, she instructed it to take her home. Meanwhile, back at Polis, Echo informed Bellamy that Octavia was dead and that she died with honor. It ended with Bellamy crying and screaming with overwhelming sorrow. With an ending like that, it was impossible for a multitude of questions and speculations not to form.

The first question that I personally have is this: “What kind of wrath will Octavia enact on Echo and anyone else in Ice Nation?” As far as season 4 is concerned, Octavia has been the MVP in terms of killing people. She is currently 4-for-4 in episodes this season where someone suffered from her wrath. The most notable one so far is Rafael, and his death is probably her most spectacular assassination in the entire series. Therefore, now that she’s alive and clearly remembers who stabbed her, the clock is ticking for Echo’s life.

Looking beyond Octavia and Echo’s rematch, there’s more to speculate about. For example, what will King Roan’s declaration of war ultimately lead to? Obviously, there will be bloodshed, but who will be the casualties? It could be setting up for King Roan to eventually die, but who will deliver his death blow? I still feel that Echo will have something to do with it. It actually wouldn’t surprise me if she ends up being the final nail in his coffin. Her current stint as Roan’s right-hand woman doesn’t have the vibe of a long-term relationship. If it were up to her, everyone in Skaikru would be dead already. She also doesn’t share the same leadership vision as Roan. Something needs to give in that situation and it’s hopefully coming soon.

Speaking of leadership, will we see a passing of the torch with Indra and Octavia? Gaia clearly has no interest in fighting, so the next “daughter” in Indra’s life is Octavia. Due to her allegiance to Indra, Octavia seems more like a Trikru member than her home clan of Skaikru. Octavia’s character has developed quite well over the seasons. She’s slowly grown into a potential leader, and this war with Ice Nation may be the catalyst for it. Bigger things are heading her way, and it will be great to see what those are.

The fifth episode of The 100‘s fourth season is entitled “The Tinder Box” and the promo looks explosive. There’s clearly going to be a showdown between Skaikru and Ice Nation where guns are drawn against arrows. It also seems like Gaia’s tinder box that holds the flame chip may be making an appearance. If you can’t wait for what happens next, then don’t forget to tune into the CW on Wednesday at 9:00 p.m.
